Hands-on learning that bridges theory and real-world applications in modern power systems.
Practicum modules are designed to give students practical experience with industry-grade tools and simulations. These activities help transform classroom knowledge into applied skills that prepare future engineers for professional challenges.
Practicum Modules
Power System Modelling & Load Flow Analysis
In this laboratory session, students will engage in power system modeling and load flow analysis using PSSĀ® SINCAL to gain practical insights into real-world electrical networks. The practicum focuses on developing the ability to construct single-line diagrams, simulate power flow, and analyze key electrical parameters such as bus voltages, current distribution, active and reactive power, and power factor.
Transmission Line Performance
The practicum explores how transmission parameters such as resistance, inductance, and capacitance affect power flow, both in unloaded conditions and under mixed inductive or capacitive loads. By conducting hands-on measurements, students will analyze current-to-voltage ratios and observe real-world effects such as line charging, power losses, and voltage fluctuations.
Short Circuit & Protection Coordination
In this module, students will explore short-circuit analysis and protection in power systems, focusing on how faults influence current, voltage, and overall system stability. Using ETAP PowerStation, participants will simulate different fault types including three-phase, single-line-to-ground, line-to-line, and double-line-to-ground, and analyze their impact based on international standards such as ANSI/IEEE and IEC.
Power Monitoring & Micro SCADA
In this module, students will learn the fundamentals of power monitoring and supervisory control using advanced metering devices and SCADA integration. The practicum introduces the use of Power Meter PM800 and ION7650, enabling direct measurement of key electrical parameters such as current, voltage, power, energy, power quality, and phasor diagrams.
Learning Beyond The Classroom
At PSSL, activities go further than simulations. Through research exhibitions, lab workshops, and industry collaborations, students gain insights that prepare them for future energy challenges
